Career & Technical Education Teacher (CTE)

Northstar Academy is a unique and highly successful private, non-profit school serving children ages 5-21. We promote educational excellence and career opportunities for students with disabilities who have academic, physical and social challenges.

Northstar Academy is currently seeking a Teacher for our Career Academy for the 2020-21 school year to provide career and technical education in the area of building trades to students aged 16-22 with a wide range of disabilities.


  • Possess general knowledge of woodworking , plumbing, and use of tools.
  • Develop differentiated daily lesson plans that adhere to the curriculum.
  • Implement curriculum and activities to ensure that their students meet academic benchmarks.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students, challenging each of them to do their best work.
  • Provide appropriate lessons to assist transitioning students to successfully move to post-secondary opportunities.
  • Facilitate meaningful and ongoing communication with families and community providers.
  • Act as on site liaison between Career Academy and work sites.
  • Provide student supervision at work sites.
  • Provide meaningful information to assist with the development and progress monitoring of IEPs.  This includes maintaining data as required by student IEP’s and IAP’s.
  • Co-teach assigned daily Advisory class in which social skills will be taught.
  • Administer interest and other career inventories.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 


  • Must hold a valid teaching license in Virginia, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s in Special Education preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail; organized, with the ability to prioritize tasks. 
  • Professional written and verbal skills. 

Hours: 7:30 am- 4:00 pm

Substitute Teacher

Northstar Academy is a private non-profit day school for students with disabilities, ages 5-21. Northstar is fully committed to providing an individualized education to a diverse population of students. We are currently seeking applicants for substitute teacher positions.  Applicants must be 18 years old, hold at least a high school diploma, have two (2) years of full time postsecondary education or experience with children with disabilities and understand the school’s policy and procedures.

The substitute teacher will be expected to provide individualized instruction, developed by the classroom, based on the needs of the student either individually and/or in groups; observe and evaluate student performance in academics and social skill development; follow oral and written directions and have the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and students; maintain effective classroom management strategies; perform other duties as requested by Head/Assistant Head of School.
